The biotech industry is thriving both here in Ireland and around the world. The nature of biotech means that those who work in it must have a strong biological knowledge as well as a confident grounding in engineering.
There are now multiple career opportunities in the biotech industry, including in healthcare, pharma, research, quality control and academia.
Students can study biotechnology in a number of different institutions around the country, but where do they go from there?
Luckily, there are number of biotech giants that are currently looking for talented staff in this arena. At this time of year, many are also looking for graduates.
Amgen
Pharma giant Amgen is a major player for anyone interested in working in biotech, with more than 500 employees between Ireland and the UK.
In 2015, Amgen opened its $300m facility in Dún Laoghaire and last year, the company took home the top prize at the Pharma Industry Awards.
Amgen is currently looking to fill roles in quality control, manufacturing process and bioanalytical sciences as well as some graduate roles.
Bristol-Myers Squibb
Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) is one of the leading biopharma giants in Ireland, focusing on innovative medicines that help patients with serious diseases.
BMS has two manufacturing plants in Ireland, one in Clare and one in Dublin.
At the moment, BMS is looking to fill various positions, including manufacturing process engineer, QC biologics analyst and process chemist.
Johnson & Johnson
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is the biggest biotech company in the world, employing more than 125,000 people across 60 countries, so it’s no surprise that it’s looking for biotech talent right now.
In Ireland, J&J employs about 3,000 people in various locations, including Dublin, Cork and Limerick.
J&J is currently hiring for a number of graduate roles in engineering, analysis and manufacturing. For more experienced talent, it’s also looking for a quality supervisor, scrum master and a number of other roles.
AbbVie
Biopharma company AbbVie came to be after Abbott Laboratories split into two companies. AbbVie is a research-based biopharmaceutical manufacturer and has three manufacturing facilities in Sligo and Cork, and two offices in Dublin.
At the beginning of this year, AbbVie announced a partnership with Irish start-up Genomics Medicine Ireland to map the genomes of 45,000 Irish people for use in improved drug development.
The company is searching for engineers, analysts and lab managers. AbbVie also has a number of internships available.
MSD
Global pharma giant MSD has multiple sites across Ireland, in Dublin, Tipperary, Wicklow, Cork and Carlow.
Earlier this year, MSD announced 330 jobs in a massive expansion. The pharma company also confirmed an investment of €40m in its Tipperary facility.
There are current vacancies in MSD for microbiologists, process supervisors, engineers and scientists. There are also a number of associate director positions available.
BioMarin
US biotech company BioMarin is headquartered in California, but it has offices and facilities around the world, including in Dublin and Cork.
This year saw a two-year expansion to BioMarin’s Shanbally site in Cork finally reach completion, with an expanded warehouse, new administration and utility offices, a canteen, and conference facilities.
BioMarin is hiring for its Cork facility, with QC analyst, associate scientist and maintenance engineer roles currently available.
