Coty, the maker of Max Factor products, is to shutter its Nenagh plant and transfer the jobs to the UK.
Just months after the takeover of the former Procter & Gamble plant in Nenagh, its new owner Coty is to shut down the operation, leading to the loss of 250 jobs.
The plan fell into the hands of Coty as part of a $12.9bn merger between itself and P&G’s Specialty Beauty Business, which made fragrances, salon hair colouring and other cosmetic products.
Production at the plant has been suspended for the day as the staff in Nenagh await the devastating news at a midday meeting.
Coty plans phased closure
Coty is expected to announce a phased closure of the plant over the next 12-18 months, according to The Irish Times.
The operations are understood to be transferred to another plant in Ashford, Kent.
Coty is the maker of cosmetic brands including Rimmel, Calvin Klein, Clairol and Mark Jacobs.
The Nenagh plant had been operated by Procter & Gamble since the 1980s and, at its peak, it employed 650 people.
More grim news is expected on the jobs front this week as workers at Coca-Cola’s operations in Drogheda await news of a reorganisation that could affect 50 workers.
