Energy provider Energia has won a public tender to continue supplying more than 195 gigawatt hours of electricity to power local authorities’ public lighting systems in a new three-year deal.

Energia said all Irish local authorities now have their public lighting powered by the company following its most recent public procurement win.

Energia expects to supply more than 195 gigawatt hours of electricity to power the local authorities’ public lighting systems in a deal that will run for three years. The value of the contract is estimated to be in the region of €33m.

Since the unmetered electricity supply market was opened to competition in 2009, the company said it had won the business of more than 50 county and city councils.

Via the latest tender, Energia will continue to supply unmetered electricity to all of the county councils and many local authorities in Ireland, including Cork City Council, Dublin City Council, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Galway County Council, Limerick City Council, Waterford City Council and Waterford County Council.

The supply deal will also cover public-sector bodies, including Dublin Airport Authority, An Garda Síochána, RTÉ and Waterways Ireland.

In the renewable sector, Energia Renewables has 550MW of operational renewable electricity capacity contracted within its energy portfolio, with a further 290MW of wind-farm projects in development across Ireland.

The supplier said it has 22pc of wind generation throughout Ireland under contract.

In October, Energia opened two new wind farms in Co Tyrone. The wind farms, which are majority owned by the Irish Infrastructure Fund, will aim to add around 50.6 megawatts (MW) of new generation capacity to the electricity grid.
