Entrepreneurs – those individuals who set up a business or businesses, take on financial risks and strive to make a profit – this week’s career memes are for you.
Entrepreneurs can be app developers, website designers, IT consultants, and more, but what defines them all is their belief in their ideas, products and services, and the desire and will to work for oneself instead of somebody else.
Often, entrepreneurship requires seeking out funding to get a business idea off the ground, and because start-ups generate jobs and help boost the economy, there are various organisations and agencies, such as Enterprise Ireland in Ireland, that support, accelerate and incubate new businesses.
What entrepreneurs do: Develop, tweak, test and promote business ideas, products and/or services, conduct market research, apply for funding and start-up accelerator programmes, manage staff (if they have one).
What they don’t do: Sleep.
Educational requirements: Anyone can be an entrepreneur, but a background in business or the area in which the entrepreneur is working, such as IT, would be beneficial.
Required skills: Innovation, creativity, communication, management, budgeting, problem solving, attention to detail.
Salary: Potential to be limitless.
