There were around 1,100 jobs announced in February, one of the lowest amounts in a long time, with well over a third in the pharma industry – notably, mostly outside of Dublin.
MSD’s news from two weeks ago, announcing 200 jobs in Carlow, Cork and Tipperary, was the biggest single figure in the month, with the company’s Irish sites now producing well over half of the company’s global top 20 products.
The new roles span operations, quality, engineering, supply chain and commercial operations.
Elsewhere, Ireland’s largest indigenous pharmaceuticals manufacturer, Chanelle Group is to invest €70m in a major manufacturing expansion that will result in the creation of 175 new jobs in Loughrea, Galway.
The company provides a spectrum of services to its customers, including research and development, registration, and production of generic pharmaceuticals for both human and veterinary pharmaceuticals.
High-value roles
The 175 new jobs will bring total employment in Chanelle Group to more than 550 people. These will be high-value jobs: 50pc of Chanelle Group’s existing workforce hold a third-level qualification.
Pharmaceutical research giant APC is to open its new headquarters in Cherrywood Business Park, Dublin, with the creation of 100 jobs.
Aside from being the company’s headquarters, the building will also be APC’s highly-advanced process research facility for biopharmaceuticals in the processes of informatics and other advanced analytical means to help streamline the development of their medicines in various fields, including cancer and HIV.
The other larger announcements include Web Summit’s plans to hire 100 people in Dublin, and Abtran creating 130 positions in Cork.
