Three Ireland will extend free 4G for a year, while O2 customers will finally get 4G
Three has confirmed that it is extending its free 4G promotion in Ireland for a further year. As well as this O2 Ireland customers will now get 4G for the first time and it will also be free for a whole year.
When Three was given the go-ahead to acquire O2 Ireland last year for €850m it basically meant that O2 Ireland’s 4G plans were put on hold.
One of the main advantages in acquiring O2 for Three was €223m worth of 4G spectrum that O2 paid for in 2012.
Three’s integration of O2 has been problematic, with a number of network outages in recent months.
During the last year or so former O2 Ireland customers were mainly confined to 2G and 3G signals.
But now Three is rolling out 4G to all O2 customers as part of its €300m network investment.
O2 mobile customers get switched on to 4G
Three today revealed that it will extend its free 4G access promotion to all customers – including 1.5m former O2 customers – from July.
Three’s original base of 500,000 customers will also get 4G free for 12 months as Three is waiving the advertised 4G fee of €4.99 per month.
The free 4G coverage will apply to all O2 and Three bill-pay customers from 1 July and pre-pay customers from the end of July.
From 1 July 2016 4G access will be available for purchase through the €4.99 add-on.
“Three is known as the network of choice for data users and we are staying true to that by giving our customer base of two million 4G access for free”, said Elaine Carey, chief commercial officer of Three.
“We’re the only network offering All You Can Eat Data and, with 4G, customers can do even more on their smartphone with faster uploading and downloading speeds.”
