Carrigaline, Cork, was today (25 September) named as the first SIRO-powered town in Munster, with the rollout creating 40 fixed-term jobs as a result of the works.
The SIRO rollout has already begun in Carrigaline, and the contract for work on the 100pc fibre network has been awarded to TLI Group, a Kerry-based infrastructural consultancy and construction company.
In order to carry out the necessary works in Carrigaline, TLI Group has created 40 six-month jobs.
Speaking at the announcement, made today at Carrigaline Court Hotel, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, said “Not only will this development help attract investment, boost competitivenes and encourage entrepreneurs to set up online busiess, it will also create 40 jobs in Cork during the rollout phase”.
“SIRO will have a transformative effect on Carrigaline by giving our young people better online learning opportunities, enabling more flexible working conditions for residents and better services in homes,” continued Minister Coveney.
Carrigaline, just a few kilometres south of Cork city, will be the first of seven Cork locations to be connected to SIRO’s 100pc fibre broadband, with Ballincollig, Cobh, Mallow, Midleton, Little Island – the home of Apple’s Irish base – and Cork city coming online later.
It is expected that the SIRO rollout will put Carrigaline on a par with leading tech cities around the world with regards to internet speed.
Sean Atkinson, CEO of SIRO, said at the announcement: “Every premises in Carrigaline will receive a 1Gb broadband connection, futureproofing them for the internet services of the future. This means that Carrigaline businesses and residents will have a broadband service four times faster than what is available in Dublin, and on a par with the most advanced cities in the world”.
It is hoped that SIRO will help to reverse the digital divide between the capital and regional towns.
