Fixed DSL and cable operators are anxious to ensure they are part of the mobile revolution and via a deal with Multimedia Polska, Dublin-based tech firm Cicero Networks is leading the charge.
Multimedia Polska a leading multi-service operator in Poland, has launched its MobilFON converged voice and messaging service using Cicero technology.
Cicero Networks, labelled a tech pioneer by the World Economic Forum, is a leading provider of fixed mobile convergence and rich communication solutions including voice, messaging, presence and video, which enable operators to deliver converged services to their enterprise and residential customers.
MobilFON offers users a converged VoIP and GSM service which supports seamless roaming between Wi-Fi and cellular networks without any disruption to calls. In addition, Multimedia also offers chat/instant messaging services to users on both Wi-Fi and 3G networks using Cicero’s IP messaging client software on their phones.

Cicero’s SIP-based solutions optimise person-to-person VoIP communications over multiple wireless networks including Wi-Fi, 3G, 2G, WiMAX and LTE.

CiceroPhone is a VCC-enabled, multimode softphone which intelligently routes calls between IP (Wi-Fi) and cellular networks. In addition, it supports messaging over IP, allowing users to manage presence and chat online even as they move between Wi-Fi, 2G and 3G networks.
Cicero’s technology is used in all the live carrier VCC services in the world today. It is fully SIP/IMS compliant and interoperability has been certified by the world’s leading network equipment providers.
Elaine Treacy, Cicero’s vice-president of marketing and alliances, said that fixed-line operators are looking to leverage their broadband assets.
“Carriers see that wireless is the way it is going and they want to use Wi-Fi and broadband in the home and bridge the gap with cellular networks. It allows them to offer more competitive rates and because calls can roam seamlessly from Wi-Fi to cellular or back again, they don’t have to pay as much termination charges to mobile operators as before.
Soon these technologies will lend themselves to internet-enabled TVs in the home and one day a voice call on a mobile on the road could be transformed via Wi-Fi or LTE to a Skype call via high-definition TV screens in the living room.
“It’s all part of the three-screen vision operators have around mobile, TV and PC. The key is to offer services across all three mediums simultaneously and easily,” Treacy said.
