Eircom/Meteor
eircom is the principal provider of fixed-line telecommunications services in Ireland with approximately 2.5 million voice and data access channels in service. eircom has the most extensive fixed-line telecommunications network in Ireland in terms of both capacity and geographic reach. The company has more than 1.2 million customers and provides a comprehensive range of advanced voice, data and Internet services to the residential, business and enterprise markets.
Its mobile division, Meteor, which was acquired on November 23, 2005, is the third largest mobile operator in Ireland and its total mobile customer numbers stood at 1,086,000 by the end of December 2009.
On the 4th of January 2010, Singapore Technologies Telemedia (ST Telemedia) acquired the controlling interest in eircom in a €140 million cash and shares deal from the Australia-based eircom Holdings Ltd. Singapore Technologies Telemedia (ST Telemedia) invests in and manages an innovative group of information-communications companies across the globe. Its core competencies are in mobile communications and global IP services. ST Telemedia has operations in the Asia-Pacific region, the Americas and Europe. Key companies in the ST Telemedia group include Global Crossing, TeleChoice, and Asia Mobile Holdings which holds interests in StarHub and Shenington Investment, which in turn owns stakes in Lao Telecommunications Company and Mfone in Cambodia.
Vodafone
Vodafone is Ireland’s leading mobile services provider with a customer base of more than 2.265 million and a market share of more than 44pc. On May 11, 2001, the Irish company officially became a subsidiary of the Vodafone Group plc, the world’s leading mobile telecommunications company with 250 million customers worldwide.
