Cable broadband and TV player UPC revealed today it is doubling its standard entry-level broadband speeds for new users from 25Mbps to 50Mbps. The company also revealed new 100Mbps and 150Mbps speed packages.
“Consumer bandwidth requirements continue to grow with the proliferation of devices in homes and the increasing integration of video into the web,” UPC sales manager Mark Coan said today.
“To meet this need and using our unique network capabilities we are from today doubling our standard-level broadband speed to 50Mbps.
“This move re-defines what constitutes the minimum acceptable broadband speed to the Irish market and clearly underlines our unique track record of sustained broadband innovation,” Coan said.
The company also demonstrated the power of its new fibre network, achieving 1.4Gbps download speeds. This included the downloading of a two-hour movie in less than 30 seconds – 15 times faster than the highest speeds on next-generation DSL technology.
In May, UPC reported a 26pc increase in broadband subscriptions with numbers now standing at 272,700.
The company says its fibre network has the capacity to reach 500,000 homes in Ireland.
