Taoiseach Enda Kenny, TD, today launched the Smile Resource Exchange, a free exchange service for business, into Dublin. Up to now the service has been available to businesses in Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick and already has 550 members.
Smile itself stands for ‘saving money through industry links and exchanges’. The idea of the organisation, which is funded primarily by the Environmental Protection Agency, is to get businesses re-using each other’s surplus products, by-products and reusable items, in order to save money and help the environment by diverting waste from landfill.
Another focus of Smile is to help companies identify new business opportunities from using unwanted resources.
Potential exchanges are identified through networking events, as well as via Smile’s online exchange facility.
Croke Park will play host to the first Dublin exchange event on 9 October next. The event will run from 9am to 1pm. At such Smile events, businesses can identify resources they would like to exchange, including items that can be re-used, by-products and surplus products.
“We want to help businesses identify resource exchange opportunities which could save businesses money as well as extending the life of materials which thus helps the environment by diverting waste from landfill,” said Smile’s project manager Michelle Green today.
