30pc of Irish organisations to implement desktop virtualisation

Thirty per cent of Irish companies plan to deploy desktop virtualisation, DataSolutions said in announcing the results of a survey.

The survey, carried out on behalf of Ireland’s leading value-add IT distributor DataSolutions, was conducted with 613 Irish CIOs, IT directors and IT mangers, and was completed in December 2010. Of those interested in desktop virtualisation, 63pc said they will be implementing a project in 2011. Only 15pc of all those surveyed did not have a specific desktop virtualisation project in mind.

The main reason given by those organisations deploying desktop virtualisation was the long-term measurable costs savings they can achieve, coupled with the efficiencies it brings to the overall organisation. Those surveyed also see migration to Windows 7 as a key driving factor for desktop virtualisation adoption in 2011, as it will help to reduce the associated migration costs and the lengthy implementation process.

In the UK, a similar study carried out in 2010 found a significant increase in the number of desktop virtualisation installations. The study found that in 2009, only 35pc of UK businesses were planning to or had already deployed a desktop virtualisation project compared to 82pc by the end of 2010, a survey carried out on behalf of Citrix in November 2010 suggested.

Desktop virtualisation demand
