iOS links bug affects thousands of iPhone and iPad users

Irate Apple iPhone and iPad users are blaming the latest iOS 9.3 update for a bug that is causing links not to work or freezing their devices

iPhone and iPad users are complaining that links to web addresses are not working and are causing iPhones to crash. The fault is being blamed on the latest iOS 9.3 update after a Booking.com app broke a central links system.

It is understood that an error in travel planning app Booking.com – one of the most downloaded free apps on iOS – overloaded one of Apple’s core systems for linking web addresses and apps within iOS on the iPhone and the iPad called Universal Links.

The bug primarily affects the latest Apple devices, including iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s Plus, and is understood to affect some iPad models as well.

Users are complaining that they are unable to open links in Safari, Messages, Mail, Notes and other apps and instead of visiting the target website the app crashes or hangs.

Others report that tapping on links simply does nothing while a tap and hold causes a crash.

Apple promises a fix

According to 9to5Mac, some users have reported that disabling JavaScript partly solves the issue for opening links in Safari.

Users are blaming the recent iOS 9.3 update, which has also been blamed for battery issues experienced on devices.

Apple said that it is aware of the issue and will release a fix in a software update.
