Apple planning a new Apple TV device launch in October

Apple’s TV set-top device for downloading and streaming content to living room TVs is about to undergo a total hardware refresh, as well as a software refresh.

According to tech blogger and venture capitalist MG Siegler, the new Apple TV hardware will be unveiled next month.

Siegler broke the news in a tweet: “I guess those excited about a software refresh in a week are gonna be *really* excited when new Apple TV hardware is unveiled next month.”

The Apple TV device is likely to be timed alongside the announcement of Apple’s next generation of iPad devices, which are also expected to be unveiled next month.

The Apple TV device, which connects living room TVs to Apple’s iTunes service, Netflix and nearby Apple devices, is seeing growing competition in the form of more advanced Wi-Fi connected set-top boxes from players like BSkyB and Liberty Global’s UPC division, which has just brought out its Horizon box.

While rumours of Apple eventually bringing out its own TV continue to persist, likely new features in the next version of the Apple TV set-top device include potentially 4K display capabilities, greater Wi-Fi capabilities, and more storage.
