Huawei is expecting the new battery technology to start a revolution that will transform smartphones, electric vehicles and lots more

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei’s Watt Lab has revealed a new smartphone battery that can be charged to 68pc capacity in just two minutes.

Batteries are the bane of every smartphone user’s life – well, depending on which phone model you are using.

But Huawei seems to have the matter well in hand.

The company’s Watt Lab has revealed new quick-charging lithium-ion batteries at the 56th Battery Symposium in Japan.

The new batteries can charge at a speed 10 times faster than normal batteries and reach 50pc capacity in just minutes.

Huawei presented videos of the two types of quick-charging lithium-ion batteries: one battery with a 600 mAh capacity that can be charged to 68pc capacity in two minutes; and another with a 3000 mAh capacity and an energy density above 620 Wh/L, which can be charged to 48pc capacity in five minutes to allow 10 hours of phone calls on Huawei mobile phones.

According to Huawei, the company bonded heteroatoms to the molecule of graphite in an anode, which could be a catalyst for the capture and transmission of lithium through carbon bonds. Huawei stated that the heteroatoms increase the charging speed of batteries without decreasing energy density or battery life.

Huawei said it is confident that the breakthrough will lead to a new revolution in mobile technology, electric vehicles, wearables and mobile power supplies.

“Soon, we will all be able to charge our batteries to full power in the time it takes to grab a coffee,” the company said.
