Women have always contributed to technological innovation and as a new year gets under way, an infographic looks back at six ladies who have altered tech history with their accomplishments.
The infographic by New Relic published on Visual.ly outlines the achievements of Anita Borg, Angela Byron, Grace Murray Hopper, Mary Lou Jepsen, Radia Perlman, and Janie Tsao, showing exactly why these women are ‘nerd heroes’.
Borg, for example, founded the Institute of Women and Technology in Palo Alto, California; Byron is an evangelist for the open source and Drupal movements; Jepsen is founder and CTO of One Laptop Per Child; Perlman is known as the mother of the internet; Tsao co-founded Linksys; and Hopper, in addition to her technological achievements, has a couple of firsts to her name: the first woman to earn a PhD in mathematics from Yale University and the first woman to reach the rank of admiral in the U.S. Navy.
The infographic comes shortly after Intel awarded five third-level students with scholarships as part of its 2012 Women in Technology programme that aims to encourage women to pursue careers in science and technology.
