The company behind Call of Duty and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1&2 reported almost 400m average monthly users in the third quarter of 2020.
Gaming and entertainment company Activision Blizzard has reported better-than-expected earnings for its third quarter, with revenues of $1.95bn – a 38pc jump from last year’s $1.28bn and higher than the expected figure of $1.8bn.
On the back of its Q3 growth and outlook for the rest of the year, the company looks set to move ahead with plans to hire more than 2,000 new staff.
Earlier this year, CEO Bobby Kotick tweeted: “Over the next year, Activision Blizzard is aiming to hire over 2,000 employees so that our incredibly talented teams can continue making epic entertainment. Now more than ever, we know our global community needs jobs – and we are proud to help.”
In an interview with Venture Beat’s GamesBeat on the back of the Q3 results, Kotick said that more than 2,000 additional recruits will be necessary to meet production demands.
Activision Blizzard is headquartered in Santa Monica, California, with a total workforce of around 10,000 people. It has offices in multiple locations across the US and Canada, as well as Sydney, Shanghai, Copenhagen, Munich, Dublin, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Madrid, Stockholm and London.
Gaming growth
Average monthly active users for Activision games in Q3 clocked in at 111m, with titles in this division including Call of Duty Modern Warfare and new release Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1&2. Blizzard games, including World of Warcraft, saw 30m average monthly users, and Candy Crush maker King had 249m.
The company said that the biggest performance driver for the period was Call of Duty, which expanded across PC, console and mobile platforms. It expects Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush to each generate more than $1bn in net bookings this year, while work will continue on the Diablo and Overwatch franchises.
Upcoming releases include Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Crash Bandicoot: On the Run and Diablo Immortal.
