Career memes of the week: graphic designer

26 Mar 2013

Three Irish designers have been included in the recently launched international publication Women in Graphic Design 1890-2012 and to follow that recognition, this week’s career memes place graphic designers in the spotlight.

Women in Graphic Design 1890-2012 features Irishwomen Anne Brady, founder and creative director of Vermillion Design; typographer, writer and lecturer Brenda Dermody; and Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (1868-1940), who was a highly regarded illustrator in her time.

The job of a graphic designer involves the creation of design solutions that have visual impact, usually in response to a brief from a client, account manager or creative director.

The resulting work can appear in various products, such as ads, books, magazines, websites, posters, displays, computer games, product packaging, and corporate communications materials.

Therefore, graphic designers require skill when it comes to creativity, time management, and use of industry software.

According to recruitment firm DesignJobs.ie, graphic designers can expect to earn €20,000-€30,000 at the start of their careers, and up to €40,000-€60,000 at a senior level (more than five years of experience).
