It has been a particularly good morning for Galway in the run-up to Christmas with the news that the medical device manufacturer Phenox is to create 65 jobs in the city.
Phenox is a German company founded in 2005 that has specialised in producing products that are used by endovascular specialists to treat ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, with its headquarters based in the city of Bochum.
But now, according to RTÉ News, the firm has said that it will be creating a new Irish manufacturing facility on the outskirts of Galway city in Ballybrit Business Park, which will be officially announced later this morning by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton.
To facilitate a first hiring of 65 new staff, Phenox says that the new facility should begin operations in the early stages of 2016 and will bring the company’s total employees to just under 200 internationally.
Over the next five years, Phenox says that it will be looking to fill the 65 positions, which cover roles in manufacturing, research, sales and support.
It now hopes to expand its reach internationally with the Galway facility, particularly in the US where it sees considerable future growth.
Elsewhere in the western city, Medtronic also announced that it was to open a new facility of its own to manufacture its next-generation medical device to treat artery disease, specifically the manufacture of the IN.PACT Admiral drug-coated balloon for the treatment of peripheral artery disease.
100 staff from different areas of the Medtronic organisation will be moved there to work in the new facility.
