University College Cork (UCC) said today that start-ups, spin-outs and various tech companies that have emerged from its start-up incubator GatewayUCC have between them created 100 new jobs.
Among the companies that have created the jobs are location company Thinksmart Technologies, which Cisco acquired; drugs firm Solvotrin Therapeutics; medical diagnostics company Metabolomic Diagnostics; and eco-software company 3 Pro Energywatch.
“Supporting job creation, innovation and entrepreneurship in the knowledge-based sector is a key remit of GatewayUCC,” explained Myriam Cronin, manager of GatewayUCC.
“We actively support start-ups and entrepreneurs located here, through our state-of-the-art on-campus facilities, access to a world-class research environment, mentoring, business coaching and support services.
“The centre is fast becoming a hub of knowledge transfer activities at UCC in the areas of IT, ICT and food/bio/pharma,” Cronin said.
Cronin highlighted another company, Atlantia Food Clinical Trials, as another GatewayUCC company that is likely to be creating jobs in the coming months.
UCC researchers collaborate with close to 700 of the world’s top universities across 110 countries and 62pc of Ireland’s most highly cited researchers are from the university.
UCC’s research income has amounted to €401m over the past five years.
“GatewayUCC is one more support UCC offers companies spinning out of its research activities,” said Tom Roche, director of Technology Transfer at UCC.
“We recognise the importance of our start-up companies in maintaining their linkage with key research groups and facilities in the university, particularly in the early stages of building their businesses,” Roche added.
