Telecoms giant Huawei plans to recruit for 60 roles at the new Huawei Ireland Research Centre. We spoke to the centre’s director about who the company is looking to hire.
At the Adapt Centre for Digital Content Technology’s recent Huawei-sponsored event, ‘Watch! Video Everywhere’, there was one thing on everyone’s mind: the future of video.
That’s a future that Huawei intends to be very much a part of.
“[Ovum says] that, in about another year, 80pc of all traffic over mobile phone will be video, so it’s of huge importance for us to have the right technologies to attract video content players onto a Huawei network,” said Derek J Collins, director of the Huawei Ireland Research Centre.
In order to develop those technologies, the Chinese company is planning to do its homework.
In November of this year, it was confirmed that Huawei would be opening a facility in Ireland, focused on carrying out research into video technologies. Along with that announcement came another: 60 roles for video researchers.
Collins offered up some more detail on the roles on offer: “Our new facility here in the Docklands is going to create a platform to attract key video researchers in all areas of video, especially mathematical logarithms, content, voice and speech, machine translation and machine learning, deep learning – the whole gamut of the video arena of research.”
Huawei is hoping to attract these researchers to Ireland, to work with professors in Trinity College Dublin and the Adapt Centre to create the technologies that will drive the future of video.
But the company’s sole purpose isn’t to recruit from overseas. In fact, Ireland’s existing tech population was one of the big draws in Huawei’s decision to set up here. The other is the ecosystem.
“That whole energy around the collaboration and ecosystem between organisations, academia and start-ups is the perfect platform to create a video research platform,” said Collins.
“I feel Ireland is the best place in Europe, or even in the world, to launch that activity.”
