Shopify boosts the broadband-powered, remote-working revolution, keeping the west awake.
Commerce platform Shopify is to create 100 new jobs for people who wish to work from home.
In the last two years, the company has grown from 50 to 150 employees in Ireland.
“We’ve seen the benefits of remote culture and how it can be utilised to rejuvenate the west of Ireland and counties like Galway,” said John Riordan, director of support for Ireland, Shopify.
Shopify is currently hiring for people interested in supporting business development, commerce and entrepreneurship. It intends to hire the 100 people in the next 12 months, with a start date as early as 21 August.
Innovative business model
Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce firm headquartered in Ottawa. It develops software for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.
It was originally founded after its owners wrote software for their online snowboard store. The platform is currently used by more than 400,000 merchants who transact more than $34bn in sales volume.
“I’m very impressed by Shopify’s innovative business model whereby the staff are not based in a central office but can work from home, and it is great news that they are creating 100 new jobs,” said An Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise and Innovation Frances Fitzgerald, TD.
“This is a really exciting, innovative company, which is paving the way for more flexible and family-friendly forms of working.”
The form of remote working, sometimes known as near-shoring or home-shoring, fits the lifestyle of people striving for a work-life balance.
One example is Caitriona Foley, who runs an award-winning wedding-planning business called True Romance Weddings, while raising a young family and working for Shopify as a ‘customer success guru’.
“I’m a mum of one tenacious toddler and in my spare time, I run a wedding planning and stationery business, but also needed a full-time job that would pay the bills,” Foley said.
“Working at home for Shopify allows me to meet new challenges every day, get more time with my son and avoid traffic jams while commuting. The company genuinely looks after its employees with great benefits and encouragement towards professional development. They recognise that happy employees produce better results.”
