Google doodle celebrates founder of science of genetics

20 Jul 2011

Google has created a new doodle on the theme of peas in a pod on its homepage to mark the 198th birthday of Austrian scientist Gregor Mendel, founder of the new science of genetics.

By studying inheritance of certain traits in pea plants, Mendel (1822-1884) formed the foundation of the science of genetics. The significance of his work was not recognised until the turn of the 20th century.

After experimenting with peas, Mendel went on to study honeybees and even created a strain of bee that was so vicious it had to be destroyed.

The significance of Mendel’s work was not appreciated until after his death.
