Mobile phone giant Nokia has taken first place in Greenpeace International’s newly released Guide to Greener Electronics.
This is the 16th edition of the Greenpeace Guide, which ranks the top 18 manufacturers of personal computers, mobile technology, TV sets and game consoles based on their policies on toxic chemicals, recycling and climate change.
The Finnish company took the first place in the environmental organisations guide with an overall score of 7.5. Nokia performed best on the toxic chemicals criteria, followed by energy, and did least well on e-waste issues.
Eliminating hazardous substances
The aim of the guide is to get companies to clean up their products by eliminating hazardous substances, take back and recycle their products responsibly once they become obsolete and to reduce the climate impacts of their operations and products.
Other firms in the top rankings were Sony Ericsson, who scored 6.9, Philips, who hung on to third place and scored 5.5, Hewlett-Packard, who climbed up from eighth place, who also scored 5.5, and Samsung, who climbed up the rankings from 13th to achieve a score of 5.3.
Other companies that performed well enough to breach the Greenpeace top 10 were Motorola, Panasonic, Sony, Apple, and Dell; who all scored between 4.9 and 5.1.
Microsoft, who were deducted points for “backtracking on its commitment to phase out BFRs and PVC by the end of 2010”, finished second last in the ranking, just above Nintendo, who scored zero on all e-waste criteria.
