Irishwoman Ciara Clancy named Cartier Awards Laureate for Europe 2015
Ireland’s Ciara Clancy from Beats Medical has been named Laureate for Europe at the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards 2015. Ciara Clancy worked for several years with sufferers of Parkinson’s in Ireland, both as a physiotherapist and volunteer. Upon graduation from Trinity College, Dublin, she launched Beats Medical in 2012, at the age of 22.
Three Irish websites win big at the World Summit Awards
Irish-based sites CoderDojo.com, Localauthorityfinances.com and PledgeSports.com have beaten off competition from websites from 178 countries at the UN-based World Summit Awards. In all, there were over 40 categories at the World Summit Awards. The winners will receive their awards at the WSA Global Congress in Shenzen in February 2016.
ChannelSight creates 40 new jobs after raising €3.3m
ChannelSight, a company led by John Beckett, who built the original Ryanair website when he was just 17, has raised €3.3m, which will result in the creation of 40 new jobs. The company provides a ‘Buy Now’ e-commerce button for some of the world’s biggest consumer brands. The funding round was led by Nuata Capital, with participation from ACT Venture Capital and Enterprise Ireland.
Jack Dorsey’s mobile payments player Square files for IPO
Whatever way you look at it, Jack Dorsey occupies the most unusual position in Silicon Valley. The newly-appointed CEO of Twitter is also the CEO of Square, an electronic payments player that has just filed for an IPO, which means he will soon be CEO of two of Silicon Valley’s hottest publicly listed tech companies.
Square, which was founded in 2009 to allow anyone with a mobile device to accept card payments anywhere and at any time, yesterday filed a Form S-1 with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and intends to list its stock on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “SQ”.
Facebook’s new Notify app a news traffic game changer?
Facebook is reportedly set to bring out a dedicated news channel within its app, called Notify, as the social media giant seeks to continue its attack on Google’s news traffic market. The app seems to let users subscribe to news outlets, which then notify them of important stories.
PewDiePie tops Forbes’ YouTube stars rich list with US$12m
The growing financial power of YouTube stars has been revealed in Forbes’ new rich list for the current generation, with Swedish star Felix ‘PewDiePie’ Kjellberg topping the chart with US$12m. He is followed in second spot by duo Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla (US$8.5m), who now run five comedy channels on YouTube under the Smosh name; third is another duo, the Fine Brothers, also on US$8.5m, while the top-ranked woman is Lindsay Stirling, who boasts 7m subscribers and takes fourth spot.
Deloitte and Tableau team up for analytics partnership
Deloitte and Tableau Software have entered an alliance, allowing the former to provide greater analytics visualisation to its customers. The duo will work together to provide agile business intelligence solutions to help customers “gain a deeper understanding of their data”.
