Equinix Ireland's Peter Lantry discusses the importance of sustainability for data centres and the rising challenge of data regulation around the world.

Data has become a vital part of many sectors, making the topic of data centres all the more important in society.

But as the global demand for data grows, so too does the amount of energy these centres require, making them a controversial topic for some countries. In Ireland for example, some groups are calling for a moratorium on new data centres due to their impact on the national grid and the heavy build-up of data centres in certain regions such as Dublin.

With this in mind, sustainability has become a key topic around future data centres. Equinix Ireland MD Peter Lantry recently said that ensuring things are “sustainable from the beginning” is a key priority for data centre operators.

Lantry also argued that digitalisation can be a pathway to sustainability, rather than a barrier to it, as businesses “adopting digital-first strategies” can help achieve their environmental, social and governance (ESG) objectives.

In this video, Lantry also discussed the key challenges facing governments and businesses as they focus on digitalisation, such as evolving regulation and data sovereignty laws.
